About the Role

We are looking for a dynamic scientist to join the Cell Metabolism editorial team and to work with broader Cell Press as a joint member of the Research Integrity and Author Experience team. This will provide a unique opportunity to work primarily with one journal but also become familiar with multiple other Cell Press family journals working across a broad range of scientific topics. We welcome applications from candidates with a strong expertise in metabolism, and we are particularly interested in candidates with translational and/or clinical research experience. To be considered for a Senior role, candidates should have 4 years prior editorial experience. Candidates with less or no editorial experience may be considered for a more junior role.

This joint role is an exciting opportunity to engage with and shape basic and translational metabolism research, while also working more broadly across journals to innovate within the publishing and peer review process. As a member of the Cell Metabolism editorial team, you would be responsible for a broad range of contributions to the journal, including recruiting exciting studies; assessing submitted research papers; selecting and collaborating with top notch referees; identifying emerging topics to commission for review articles; writing and editing content for the journal homepage and social media outlets; and engaging authors throughout the review process. You will play an active role in the development and implementation of journal strategy. As a joint member of our cross-journal team, you will work across our portfolio of biomedical and life science journals. Your role will entail coordinating closely between authors and editors at multiple journals to optimize overall publishing success; working on cross-journal projects and initiatives; assessing submitted research articles and coordinating the peer review process at journals across our portfolio. The job also entails traveling to scientific conferences and research where you will directly interact with the scientific community and hear about cutting-edge research developments

Cell Press is an international organization with primary offices in Cambridge, Massachusetts; London; Amsterdam; and Beijing. This is a full-time editorial position based in our Beijing, Shanghai, or Shenzhen, China offices. We support flexible working, and we are open to considering flexible work arrangements for this position.

Responsibilities

  • Assessing submissions and overseeing the peer review and editorial process

  • Recruiting exciting research studies and commissioning and manage a pipeline of high-quality reviews and editorial content

  • Establishing relationships with researchers and representing the journal and Cell Press at scientific meetings and visits to research institutions

  • Contributing to broader Cell Press initiatives to shape the future of science communication

Requirements

  • A Ph.D. in any area related to the topics that Cell Metabolism covers. MDs with extensive research experience may also be considered.

  • Ability to think critically about a wide range of scientific issues

  • Strong communication skills

  • Interest in engaging with the scientific community

  • Talent for distilling complex concepts and communicating them effectively

  • Strong teamwork skills and a collaborative problem-solving mindset

  • Strong time management and organizational skills, with the ability to balance a range of priorities to achieve overall team goals

  • The ability to work well in diverse team settings, across time zones and countries

  • Very good communication skills, with an interest in science communication and publishing trends
