Your Opportunity
We are currently seeking a talented and ambitious Senior Terrestrial Biologist to join our Ecology Team in our Ottawa office. The successful candidate will join our team of vegetation, wildlife and freshwater ecologists, and help to coordinate natural heritage components of projects in multiple sectors, including transportation, municipal infrastructure, community development, mining & aggregates, oil & gas, and natural resource management. We are looking for an enthusiastic professional who can model technical excellence, provide project leadership, and engage in business development opportunities.
Your Key Responsibilities
Contribute leadership to Stantec’s Ontario-based Ecology staff by providing technical direction and mentorship to facilitate long-term sustainability and succession within the Ecology Team
Manage, plan (i.e., develop scope and budget) and lead terrestrial (vegetation and wildlife) programs, such as baseline studies, impact studies and environmental assessments
Understand recent and existing standard practices and techniques for surveying and assessing vegetation, wildlife and wildlife habitat, including species at risk
Coordinate and oversee terrestrial field programs and field staff
Manage all phases of a project life cycle, including baseline inventories, impact assessment / Environmental Assessment (EA), construction phase environmental management, and long-term monitoring
Manage tasks and projects according to approved scopes of work, and deliver quality reports on schedule and within budget
Develop and maintain client and regulatory contacts
Provide understanding of project goals and sound environmental project advice to external clients and internal Stantec contacts
Provide interdisciplinary liaison with other business lines within Stantec
Lead proposals and other business development activities
Contribute to strategic business development initiatives in new and emerging areas, such as climate change ecology
Contribute to the team’s operational success by tracking workload and project budgets
Work collaboratively in a team setting with colleagues in a respectful and cooperative manner
Embrace and promote Health, Safety, Security and Environment (HSSE) Policies, Procedures, Standards and Guidelines in the execution of all work
Participate in periodic travel throughout Ontario for projects, client liaison and business development
Qualifications
Your Capabilities and Credentials
Knowledge and experience with environmental assessments, environmental impact studies, and natural heritage policies in Ontario especially regarding vegetation, wildlife and wildlife habitat
Knowledge of current provincial and federal government regulatory requirements, including applied experience with various regulators such as Environment and Climate Change Canada, the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry and various conservation authorities and municipalities
Experience in business development, working with and guiding clients, and proposal writing
Experience liaising with industry clients, government agencies, regulatory bodies and the public
Experience leading baseline studies, planning, design, construction, monitoring and compliance of various infrastructure and linear feature projects (e.g., transportation, oil & gas, urban land development), including pre- and post-construction monitoring
Experience coordinating terrestrial field programs, and guiding staff in data management, data analysis and report preparation
Experience working on multidisciplinary teams
Experience preparing applications for authorization under the federal Species at Risk Act , and/or the provincial Endangered Species Act, 2007 or other legislation
Experience applying the Significant Wildlife Habitat Technical Guide and Ecoregion Criteria Schedules
Proven technical communication, writing and organization skills, including demonstrated experience preparing technical reports
Strong task management skills
Able to work both independently and in a collaborative team environment
Thrives in an environment with diverse and dynamic projects, and enjoys working on multi-disciplinary scopes of work
Additional Assets:
- Experience managing multi-disciplinary projects
- Expertise related to statistical analysis
- Peer reviewed publication(s) in a related field
- Experience working with Indigenous communities
- Experience engaging with the public
- Certification or experience applying Ecological Land Classification in Ontario
- Certification or experience applying the Ontario Wetland Evaluation System
Valid driver’s license
Education and Experience
A Bachelor’s degree or technological diploma in Ecology, Biology, Zoology or Environmental Sciences is required; a Master’s degree is preferred
10 years of industry experience, with at least 2 years at a senior level in environmental consulting
