New York University Project Coordinator (Part-Time) in New York, New York

This position supports the qualitative portion of an NSF-funded study to understand pathways to college and STEM careers among students of color from immigrant family backgrounds in NYC (PI: Sebastian Cherng). The project coordinator for the qualitative study will be supervised by Sumie Okazaki (co-Investigator) and is specifically focused on one neighborhood (Sunset Park) in Brooklyn. The project coordinator will oversee the data collection of interviews with 20 immigrant families with high school-age children (10 Chinese Mandarin speaking families, 10 Spanish speaking families), in addition to ethnographic observations of the neighborhood characteristics that may be especially relevant to STEM and academic preparation for students.

This is a part-time position (approximately 10 hours/week).

In compliance with NYC's Pay Transparency Act, the hourly base salary range is $27.50-$28.25/hour.

Per NYU's remote-work policy, this position is expected to be fully remote, with option to work hybrid in an on-campus office.

Position Resposibilities:

Under the supervision of Sumie Okazaki and other faculty investigators, the project coordinator will be responsible for:

  • assisting the PIs to recruit a bilingual Mandarin interviewer and a bilingual Spanish interviewer

  • working with PIs to train the interviewers

  • working with the PIs and the interviewers to recruit 3 Chinese-speaking and 10 Spanish-speaking families

  • helping each interviewer with scheduling and recording the interviews with 13 families (13 adults, 13 students)

  • arranging the payment to each family; maintaining a secure online archive of interview recordings

  • supervising volunteer RAs on discrete research tasks (e.g., transcribing interviews, conducting ethnographic observations)

  • conducting interviews with families

  • Fluent in either Mandarin Chinese or Spanish and English

  • Experience as a project coordinator or project manager

  • Sufficient knowledge of Sunset Park and Brooklyn with respect to immigrant geography

  • Advanced undergraduate or graduate student in social or behavioral sciences

  • Interest in social science or education research with immigrant families
