Job Summary
Under moderate direction of the Pathologists, Client Support Facilitator, and System Director Lab & Pathology Services, Clinical Laboratory, the Histotech performs technical processing and related clerical functions to prepare specimens for evaluation by pathologists and cytotechnologist. Working Conditions, Hazards and Physical Effort
Work standard work week with overtime as necessary. Staffing may require alteration to regularly scheduled shift. Work in a well lit laboratory area with adequate ventilation. Work with formalin, xylene and other chemicals and reagents that are toxic, caustic or flammable. Physical exertion is light to moderate with moving of supplies and large reagent containers required. The task of this job involves exposure to blood, body fluids and tissues. Must be able to move or position 25 lb.
Minimum Qualifications or Equivalents
Education: High school diploma or equivalent with basic understanding of chemistry and laboratory mathematics. Associate or Bachelor’s Degree of Science is preferred.
Experience: Approved training in histology techniques and procedures is required.
EQUIPMENT USED/SPECIAL SKILLS REQUIRED: Requires skilled use of microtome and use of tissue embedding equipment. Good manual dexterity necessary to manipulate thin tissue sections and to embed minute tissue specimens. Color discrimination required to verify quality of staining reactions.
Licenses, Certifications, and/or Registrations
ASCP registration as HT or HTL is preferred.
