Summary

The Senior Paralegal, Intellectual Property and Business Development will manage and support various aspects of the company's intellectual property matters, including litigation support, docket management, patent portfolio management, and process enhancement. This role will assist with legal support for business development and alliance management projects and handle intellectual property projects, coordinate major litigation projects, and manage the docket database. The Senior Paralegal will also support the prosecution and maintenance of the global patent portfolio and assist with tracking expenditures. This role will contribute to the identification of opportunities for continuous improvement within the IP management framework. Additionally, will also participate in other department-specific or cross-functional projects as assigned.

Responsibilities

Intellectual Property Litigation Support:

  • Provides general support in the coordination of and assisting in intellectual property litigation and PTO-related matters.

  • Assists with the issuance, tracking, and lifting of legal holds related to intellectual property cases.

  • Coordinates major intellectual property litigation projects, and legal projects related to intellectual property.

Intellectual Property / Business Development Management and Process Enhancement:

  • Organizes and maintains files for the Intellectual Property and Business Development (IP/BD) team, including electronic patent and trademark-related files.

  • Maintains and updates IP/BD procedures, workflows, policies, and systems.

  • Proactively identifies and recommends opportunities to streamline IP/BD team processes and procedures and promote more efficient ways of working.

  • Assists with tracking expenditures and processes expenses, invoices, and purchase orders on behalf of the IP/BD team working with the department vendor coordinator.

  • Manages the daily processing of incoming and outgoing correspondence with US and foreign outside counsel, USPTO, and foreign patent offices.

  • Contributes to the identification of opportunities for continuous improvement of systems, processes, and practices within the IP/BD management framework.

Patent Portfolio Management:

  • Supports prosecution and maintenance of the global patent portfolio, including liaising with outside counsel, foreign agents and other regional intellectual property colleagues (in particular in Japan)

  • Supports invention disclosure tracking, review, and evaluation

  • Drafts and/or assists in the drafting of IP-related documents for filing with the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO)

  • Monitors status and needs throughout all phases of the patent prosecution process

  • Maintains internal and external IP reporting sites, including patent marking and trademark lists

  • Prepares IP docket reports and other IP portfolio reports.

  • Assists with Patent Term Extension (PTE) applications, exclusivity requests, Orange Book listings, and other regulatory matters, as needed

  • Ensures all filings and response deadlines are met

  • Monitors and maintains the Patent Annuities process and cycle

Business Development Support

  • Coordinating and assisting attorneys with business development and alliance management activities, including various initiatives and projects, as needed.

  • Assists attorneys in providing legal advice to the business development team.

  • Supports attorneys in reviewing and preparing contracts, agreements, and other legal documents related to business development activities, as needed

  • Helps manage contract negotiations under the guidance of attorneys

  • Coordinates with other regions and teams to ensure effective collaboration and communication.

  • Ensures BD contracts and related documents are properly stored in legal document repository

  • Other department-specific or cross-functional projects or tasks as assigned within, or by, the Intellectual Property / Business Development group.

Qualifications : Successful candidates will be able to meet the qualifications below with or without a reasonable accommodation.

Education (from an accredited college or university)

  • Bachelor's Degree required

  • Paralegal Certificate or equivalent degree required

Experience

  • 4 or More Years In-house legal department and/or law firm experience as an intellectual property paralegal with US and foreign prosecution experience; 5-7 years required

  • 1 or More Years Experience in corporate and/or pharmaceutical industry preferred

  • 1 or More Years Experience with large/major intellectual property litigation matters preferred

  • 1 or More Years Experience with business development matters preferred Licenses and

Certifications

  • Certified Paralegal required

Travel

Ability to travel up to 10% Office environment; limited travel (between affiliates and/or to vendors/archives)
