Jackson County ISD Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing in Jackson, Michigan

Summary: Provides direct and indirect service to students receiving special education. Provides instructional leadership to general education, special education teachers. Schedules and chairs all IEPs for students on caseload and in assigned special education classrooms.  Serves as liaison and consultant to local school districts.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following: (Does not include all tasks employee may be expected to perform.)

 

  1. Direct classroom instruction
    1. Creates and implements lesson plans.
    2. Coordinates schedules with support staff including Sign Language Interpreters.
    3. Works with general education teachers to create schedules.
    4. Grades and maintains assignments and IEP goals as appropriate.
    5. Coordinates accommodations in classroom settings.
  2. Participates in re-evaluation of students on caseload.
  3. Participates in diagnostic and IEP progress for children suspected of having a hearing impairment. Activities may include:
    1. Assists with scheduling of audiological and otolaryngological examination needed for determination of eligibility.
    2. Classroom observations, achievement testing, conference with teachers and parents regarding hearing loss and its effect on student's school performance.
    3. Brings pertinent information to IEP meeting to document that student has "hearing impairment which interferes with learning."
  4. Provides direct service to students with disabilities. Activities may include:
    1. Academic tutoring to ensure success in regular classroom setting.
    2. Provision of auditory training and language concepts to those students who would benefit.
    3. Teaching of lip-reading skills to those students who would benefit.
    4. Repair and use of hearing aids.
    5. Assistance with scheduling, vocational choices, higher education.
  5. Provide consultation to general education teachers who have students with disabilities in their classrooms. Activities may include:
    1. Preferential seating for students.
    2. Explanation of extent of hearing loss and limitations of the students.
    3. Functional tips on how to teach a child who lip-reads or has a hearing aid.
    4. Suggestions to accommodate curriculum/assignment: i.e., extra time to complete assignments.
  6. Provides consultation to parents of students with hearing impairments. Activities may include:
    1. Home visits for progress reports and activities.
    2. Follow-up on hearing aid evaluations.
    3. Explanation of care and function of hearing aids.
    4. Follow-up on audiological exams and medical evaluation.
  7. Chairs annual review meetings on students with disabilities on their caseload. Complete necessary forms.
  8. Prepares annual progress reports on each student, forward copies to school and Registry.
  9. Regular and predictable in-person attendance is required for this position.

Education and/or Experience: 

  1. Required master's degree in education or a field of study related to special education.
  2. Full approval in Hearing Impaired in the State of Michigan.
  3. Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate.
  4. Show evidence of minimum of 3 years of satisfactory teaching experience, not less than 2 years of which shall be in teaching in a special education classroom.
